Entry to Mid-Level Landscape Architect
Min. Required Years of Experience: FLSA Status: Exempt
Entry Level Landscape Architect (LA 1): 0-5 years
Mid-Level Landscape Architect (LA 2): 5-10 years, Excellent to Superior Performance
Required Education: The education required by any particular state for licensure. Professional degree in Landscape Architecture from an accredited university is preferred.
Licensure: Licensure preferred for experienced candidates, for recent graduates, licensure should be a professional development goal. The firm provides support for LARE exam prep, mentorship, and tracking.
Level of Experience: Entry to Mid-Level
Reports to: Studio Director, Vice Presidents, Senior Vice Presidents, COO, or President/CEO
Level of Supervision: Works independent in all aspects of the production of the construction drawings with major decisions made by supervisors. Works under general supervision.
General Description:
Supports design and technical production for Landscape Architecture projects, including public parks, civic spaces, and private developments.
Collaborates with project teams to develop concepts, prepare construction documents, and assist in site planning and grading.
Engages in sustainable design practices and explores innovative materials and technologies.
Opportunity for growth into licensure and project leadership roles.
Communication Skills: Shall have excellent written and oral communication skills.
Level of Judgement Regarding Projects and Design:
- Exercises sound judgement on routine design and technical tasks.
- Consults with senior staff or Studio Director on complex design issues, regulatory compliance, and sensitive client matters.
- Expected to develop independent decision-making skills as experience grows.
Mentoring: Expected to seek mentorship and actively participate in professional development programs. Our Studio Director is actively invested in mentorship and growth of this position.
Client Relationship: Supports senior staff in maintaining positive client relationships. May participate in client meetings to present design concepts and gather feedback. Not typically the primary client contact but expected to represent the firm professionally when interacting with clients.
Role as Landscape Architect:
- Primary Focus:
o Support design development and technical production for Landscape Architecture projects, including public parks, civic spaces, and private developments.
o Strong design sensibility and creative thinking
o Proficiency in sketching, hand drawing, CAD, and 3D rendering
o Team collaboration and communication skills
- Responsibilities:
o Assist in concept design, site planning, grading, and planting design
o Prepare construction documentation and 3D renderings
o Collaborate with multidisciplinary project teams and consultants
o Apply sustainable design principals and explore innovative materials and software solutions.
- Growth Path:
o Opportunity to progress towards licensure and take on project leadership roles. Mentorship is emphasized, with the Studio Director actively invested in professional development.
- Preferred Skills:
o Progress toward licensure (LARE Exams)
o Experience with public park or civic space design
o Familiarity with Revit, Rhino, or other modeling tools
o Community engagement experience
o Planting design and ecological systems knowledge
o LEED accreditation or interest in sustainable nature-based solutions
Software: Working knowledge of:
- Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign)
- SketchUp
- ArcGIS
- Lumion
- Preferred: Familiarity with Revit, Rhino, or other modeling tools
Office Hours: Standard office hours.
Travel: Occasional travel for site visits and project meetings may be required; however, the position is primarily office- based with standard working hours.
